Why do stock token prices move when the US market is closed?

While US exchanges are closed there is no live share price, so a stock token's price is set by people buying and selling the token itself, and news that lands after the close can move it away from the last close. In Catch each is a token that tracks a US-listed stock or ETF, issued by Coinbase or by Robinhood Assets (Jersey) Limited, not by Catch, and the issuers say they are not available to persons in the US.

Why the price moves while US markets are closed

FINRA says the share prices recorded at 4 p.m. on the exchanges are the official closing prices for the day, and the next day's opening prices come from supply and demand around the time markets open.

Stock tokens keep trading onchain after the close, overnight and at the weekend. When news lands in that time, such as results or another company announcement, buyers and sellers of the token act on it before the exchanges reopen, so the token's price can move while the official closing price stands still.

FINRA also says trading outside regular hours is less liquid and often more volatile, because some investors react quickly to results and other announcements, which usually come out outside regular hours.

Robinhood mints and redeems its stock tokens only from Monday 02:00 to Saturday 02:00 CET; onchain trading continues outside that window.

What Catch shows while the market is closed

The token price Catch shows comes from a live quote to buy the token and sell it back onchain, so it is what the token trades at, not a share price.

While US markets are closed there is no live share price to compare with, so token prices can move away from the last close. The stock page shows no premium until the next session.

You see the price and the fee before you slide.

Catch lists 70 stocks and ETFs: 17 have a Coinbase token on Base and 69 have a Robinhood token on Robinhood Chain. Each stock token is a token that tracks a US-listed stock or ETF. The tokens are issued by Coinbase on Base and by Robinhood Assets (Jersey) Limited on Robinhood Chain, not by Catch.

Trade while US markets are closed

  1. Add money

Send USDC on Base to the address Catch shows under Add money, or pay by card where it is offered.

  2. Pick a stock

Choose any stock or ETF on the stocks list. One balance, held in dollars, covers Base and Robinhood Chain.

  3. Slide to buy

Check the price and the fee, then slide to confirm. Catch charges 0.50% once per move, $0.10 minimum. Selling works the same way.

Where Catch is not a fit

Catch sells stock tokens held in your Catch wallet, not a brokerage account. If you want a brokerage account, Catch is not a fit.

If you want to trade at a live share price, trade during US market hours: at night and at the weekend there is no live price to compare with.

If you live in the US, Catch is not a fit: Coinbase says its stock tokens are not available to persons in the US and other restricted places. Robinhood says its Stock Tokens are not available to residents of the US, Canada, the UK or Switzerland.

Questions

Why do stock prices change over the weekend when the market is closed?
The official price does not: FINRA says the 4 p.m. price on the exchanges is the official closing price until the market opens again. A price that does move at the weekend comes from trading somewhere else, such as a stock token, which keeps trading onchain, so its price follows what people buy and sell it for.
What happens when the US market opens again?
FINRA says the opening price comes from supply and demand around the open, which can differ from prices traded outside regular hours. Once there is a live share price again, the Catch stock page compares the token with it and shows the premium.
Can I buy or sell while the US market is closed?
Yes, as stock tokens. Catch has no trading hours, so you can buy or sell any of the 70 stocks and ETFs on its list at night, at the weekend and on US market holidays. While US markets are closed there is no live share price to compare with, so token prices can move away from the last close. You see the price and the fee before you slide.
Who can buy these stock tokens?
Coinbase says its stock tokens are not available to persons in the US and other restricted places. Robinhood says its Stock Tokens are not available to residents of the US, Canada, the UK or Switzerland. Catch blocks buying and selling only in Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Russia, Belarus, Myanmar and four occupied regions of Ukraine.
